Set Goals for your life achievements Last week's tip: Learn, Customize and innovate your time management methods Reminder: Do you have a planner or any other way you record your activities? Format it suit your special needs. This week's Tip: Goal setting is very important to understand where you are going. Action items: "If you are not aware of the direction you are going, you will end up exactly where you are going." One of the important things to do in life is setting goals. What do we want to do and be in your life? Every achievement starts with the goal in mind. But finding our goals is not an easy task. If we don't make up our mind about what we want to be in our life, after some time find that you were headed in the wrong direction. One of the best ways to understand goals of our life is to ask oneself a question: "What will I do if I had only 6 months to live?" It is said that Alfred Nobel who invented dynamite had the misfortune of reading his own obituary. When his brother died, a newspaper wrongly reported that Alfred Nobel had died and blamed him for the one who invented "destructive dynamite". That changed his life. He originally intended arms to promote "peace" and after that incident he constituted "Nobel Prizes" and did lot of work to promote peace in the world. Another way of understanding our goals is to list our various roles and write a few words describing how you want to play your each role. All of us play roles of an employee, a supervisor, a son, a spouse, a father, a brother, a friend and so on.. List of each of your role and write a descriptive statement of how you want to play your role. As an employee: I want to perform every task up to satisfaction of my supervisor and help my company grow. I will take all necessary initiatives to excel in my role as an employee. By writing down a descriptive statement of each role along with the question of What if I had only 6 months to live, will help us determine our goals in life. Just to add a note, today I was reading a newspaper article where a journalist changed his life priorities after he had his first heart attack. Earlier he used to be so much immersed in his work and an expected mild heart attack made him realize his personal life priorities and his unexpected 3 weeks stay in hospital made him rethink and started to change his life style and priorities. Summary Goal setting takes lot of introspection and while doing this introspection you can write down your whatever goes on your mind on paper and review those ideas regularly. |
