Utilize the potential of tools: Spend Time in better ways
A few weeks back I mentioned that I bought Palm Pilot and
started using it. Though I know it has features of synchronizing calendar and
tasks with Outlook, somehow I didn't bother trying it. Because of this I was not
really using the tool to its potential. Though my friends told me, I hesitated.
It was after two months after buying the tool, I synchronized my calendar and
task list. WOW. I was thrilled. I started wondering why didn't I do it before.
Though it is a simple example, we all do this mistake. Many of
us have so many tools accessible to us. But we don't have time to explore these
tools and save precious time. I would not ask everyone to start spending time to
explore the new features etc.
Don't get stuck. Don't imagine that you have unique problems.
I have seen solutions for remote problems, I have not imagined. So when you
encounter a practical problem, imagine who would have encountered similar
problem. Ask them, if they have a solution. That saves a lot of time.
Be effective, not just efficient.
Do RIGHT THINGS, not just things right.
Take time to share what you learned with others so that they
get benefited.
In my office, sometimes people come to me asking for minor
issues using Office Applications, because I have solved one or two minor
problems in past.
Similarly I go to others to get database related problems
solved. Most of the times, I am successful in finding a quick solution.
Last week, I was talking to another friend who said he is
wasting lot of time just in reading e-mail over web. Checking e-mail (e.g. yahoo
account) on web takes lot of time. You spend lot of time just deleting e-mails,
sorting e-mails. I suggested to him, he should consider spending some time and
money to get POP access. He switched last week and finally he is glad that he is
now saving lot of time. He was ignorant that he can be efficient by switching to
POP access and downloading e-mails to Outlook Express.
Main thing to remember is don't get bogged down by simple
problems. There are very good solutions available to simple problems. The money
you spend to solve these simple problems is not cost, but an investment. You can
earn money, but not time.
We cannot save time, we can stop wasting time in unnecessary
activities, but spend time on better activities.
