Spread the time management discipline

During one of the previous tips, I said "Encourage time management in your organization".

Why is it important that we share our experiences and improved time management skills with others? As a team member we all depend on others in our team to maintain balance in our work schedules.

You come to work to a complete a milestone a little ahead of schedule. Your team member comes with an urgent request which is a customer issue and you can't avoid completing this task. This issue came up because some one ignored the issue when it was important and not urgent and now it became important and urgent task. Imagine your own frustration, if you end up spending whole day on this task and don't make a progress on your own task.

It is like this: To be safe on road, it is not enough that we drive safely, but everyone also drives safely. Even one person driving recklessly is likely to cause confusion and accidents on road.

Extending this example, it is not enough that we have self discipline and following good time management techniques. Any one in our team or organization who does not care a damn about such discipline can cause lot of problems.

And getting others to understand importance of this self discipline and get them to co-operate is not an easy task. We have to keep trying continuously.

I have taken the initiative to tell others in my team about time management. Time Management 101 slides which I prepared were done for this specific purpose. I have tried to impress on my team members how after using time management tips, I have been to improve my balance in life. I showed specific examples. Some people immediately got impressed and some were amused and some were disinterested. I didn't expect to impress all, but I was happy that at least a couple of them were able to take a step towards time management.

Similarly I try to promote better planning tools wherever I feel there is a need for the same.

Try to share your experiences and make a sincere efforts. Wishing others will get organized without showing them how to do it, is not realistic. Show by personal example and people will find your tips useful.

Wish you luck if you are doing something similar at work or in personal life.
