Use 'free' time effectively

Kishore (June 2003)

During last couple of weeks I attempted making use of wait times effectively. I have habit of reading magazines and books and sometimes I found it difficult to find time to complete my reading. I decided to try a new strategy. Whenever there is a possibility of wait time, I decided to take my reading with me.

Last week I went out for my car service which involved some waiting. I was able to finish reading latest magazine issue while I was waiting. I found this strategy useful. At the same time I also made a few calls which I was planning to do and was able to catch up.

Then I tried this strategy once more. I took out my daughter to park. While she was playing I was able to quickly read through a few pages. I have seen people doing this consistently at hospitals, airports and other places where wait time is inevitable. I hesitated to follow this but once I tried it, I found it useful.

It is not necessary that one needs to read only books. You can use this time to do other things also. Are there any other advantages?

Yes. We value our time a lot and wait times are many times unpredictable. Waiting for a doctor appointment can be 10 minutes sometimes or 1 hour sometime. This unpredictability can also have emotional impact on us. We can easily get upset and frustrated at such moments. By doing a useful activity at that time we can avoid feeling upset and at the same time get benefit.
