Using Visual Reminders Sometime back I discussed how to form a habit using a checklist. Generally we need a reminder so that we don't forget. When the reminders are on paper or on computer, it pops-up at us only when we look at it. Then using Visual Reminders is a better idea. Visual reminders are objects that come constantly into our view as we go about and keep us on track. Suppose you want to pursue a goal like buying a house, you can keep a picture of a house on your desk or some other place so that you are constantly reminded of your goal. I see this concept is embedded into some things we already use. If you own a car, you will see fuel gauge which visually indicates how much fuel it has and a blinking signal on car is a visual reminder for you to fill fuel. The same concept can work in other areas. Now that I think about it, I notice that most of the times objects lying around act as visual reminders. I think this was the concept behind "post it" notes. If it is not possible to for you keep a picture of a task you need to do, you can even try post it notes. Recently I got a calendar which allows you to put stickers on a date related to the event. The calendar comes with a set of stickers which can be used. This is also a visual reminder. You can pull out the sticker of a birthday and put it on a "birthday". You can even try creating your own special visual reminders by printing your "Critical Project Plan" and putting it on your desk and so on. If you constantly forgetting to take the "picture roll" you wanted developed, put it visibly next your door. Next time you are going, your eye will catch the object. We are quick to recognize brief changes in our surroundings. Can you think if any other ways you can use Visual Reminders? Bonus Tip: In absence of a "professional planner kit" you can still print your daily/weekly planner. One of my colleagues used to do this. If you are using Outlook, Click on Calendar folder. Select 1 day or 1 week format and click "Print Preview". You will see one page Calendar which you can print and use it to write down your tasks lists and so on. |
