Catching the Bubbles
Kishore C.S. (June 2001)

Over one weekend I was playing with my daughter. She was playing with her bubble maker. She wanted me to blow the bubbles when she tries to catch them and play. As I watched her trying to catch the bubbles, I found that she was not catching any of the bubbles because she wanted to catch all the bubbles and was waving her hands very fast. Then I told her to stop waving so fast and hold her hand steady and catch one bubble after another. She understood me and immediately switched to this strategy. Her success rate in catching the bubbles improved drastically and she was happy with her achievement.

It then dawned on me. Do we practice this simple truth in our life goals?. We have so many goals to achieve. Becoming extremely busy trying to achieve all the goals at the same time is like trying to catch all the bubbles by frantic waving. It is necessary that we compose ourselves, and start focusing. The only way you can reach more goals is pursuing one goal after another.

Coupled with this simple lesson, I will also mention about important lesson I learned related to goal setting

Our mind is capable of thinking at a faster rate than we can imagine. We start everyday with 'fresh goals' to be achieved 'today'. All these 'x' number goals will be running around in the mind and remembering the right task at the right moment is not so easy. It makes good sense to slow down the mind and write those goals on paper one by one. When you start to write down your thoughts mind which was thinking at 100 words a second would slow down to 5-10 words per second. At this point of time our thoughts crystallize to 'action oriented' goals. When we did not put the goals on paper it seems there are 'infinite' things to do but when we write them down, it comes ‘finite’. This simple task helps a lot in achieving goals. I have been doing this using my time management kit for more than 2.5 years and I found it very useful. Try this simple method out, if you are not doing it already.
Summary:

To achieve better success in life it is important to be 'focused' on the goals instead of dissipating efforts aimlessly. Journaling our goals and keeping track of them is an excellent way to aid this process of achieving goals. Try it.
