Internet browsing tips Kishore C.S. (Dec 1999) Internet browsing costs time and money. Get your money/times worth by being an intelligent Internet User. Use the following tips for better Net Browsing Experience. 1. Have a purpose: Never launch your web browser without a purpose or goal in mind. If you do this, end of the session you feel as if you have not achieved anything. Examples of purposes can be: check e-mail, find your friend by search, read article posted by your friend. 2. Identify areas of your search: If you are browsing to while away your time you may feel frustrated after your session. Prior to deciding on the keywords to use for Searching ensure the areas you are searching for are your goals. Internet is like a huge library. Unless you know what you are looking for you will be lost soon. Use Search Engines Effectively. Use key words to search for related links and web sites. 3. Narrow down sites needed: Once search has listed possible sites or pages, make note of them (write them on a book or bookmark them if you are using a permanent machine). Complete the Search till you feel you have narrowed down to the information you were looking for. 4. Plan to complete one or two sites per week: Visit the sites you have identified on during a week and learn all you can. Dont plan to revisit the site unless you want to refer back. Dont visit too many sites on a single day. It is like reading a book. If you want to learn from the book you have spend enough time. If you have to learn from a web site you better spend some quality time. 5. Have criteria for rejecting a site: As you browse you will realize the relevance of each site your web search purpose in first 15 minutes. If it does not match your goal go to the next search. Save Pages for future reference in your machine. Read them at leisure. Online reading is always not easy. 6. Create your own short list of Web Sites. Have the List of sites as a HTML File and make the HTML file as the opening file for your web browser application. I found making a bookmark is good practice but as your internet browsing period increase you will end up searching for the address you wanted. Categorize pages you would like every week or month maintain a list in this page. I have been using this method and I found it quite useful. 7. Fix time for Internet Browsing: Mark the time for browsing in your schedule and stick to the schedule. Dont vary your time schedules drastically. Choose a time that is convenient to you and stick to it. The above are the few tips I follow to enhance my effectiveness in internet browsing. I hope you will find them useful. Do let me know if you have tips which you can add to this. I will add them so that someone will find them useful. |
