Tips: Set Moderate Goals
When we start on a new and exciting phase, we are likely to be carried away and set unrealistic and aggressive goals. It is important to take everything into perspective and set moderate goals.
Every time I go to exericse, I remember an important lesson I learned as a child. When I was around 12 years old our family went to Bombay (now called Mumbai) during summer vacation . We stayed with our cousins at IIT Powai. During those playing days, we all agreed that regular exercise to body is important. We decided to start exercising and went to nearby play ground. We started running around the play ground. In the excitement of the moment, I didn't stop when I was tired. I ended up running 4 laps (almost equivalent of a mile). Since my body was not used to such exertion, next day I was down with fever and that was end of exercising. This is the lesson I learned. I decided to be more cautious from then onwards. Instead of setting aggressive and unrelastic goals for new activities, I set moderate goals and make amendments based on progress.
By setting aggressive goals we easily setup ourselves for failure. As initial enthusiasm dies down, we realize that we cannot meet our goals and after some time we may completely abandon the goal.
Set a moderate goal. Strive slowly and steadily. As you see yourself making progress, reset your goals and expectations so that you challenge yourself. Achievement adds to the enthusiasm and lets you achieve the moderate goals instead of completing giving up.
